i-Appraisal — A one-minute phone walkaround becomes a NAMA-graded condition report.

NAMA-graded vehicle condition reports from a one-minute phone walkaround, for UK auction and dealer groups. Each deduction cites the video frame it was seen in, and BVRLA fair wear and tear verdicts and priced damage come in the same report.

The problem

Manual appraisals take staff time on every car, and when a grade is disputed it comes down to one person's memory against another's.

What we built

A phone-installable app (no app store) that turns a short walkaround video into a graded report. Every finding records its location, measurement, the grading rule applied and a still from the video, kept with the report as evidence.

What it does today

A graded condition report with BVRLA fair wear and tear and priced damage, every deduction backed by the video frame it came from.

What makes a product like this hard to build

  1. 01

    Video in, grades out

A one-minute walkaround is thousands of frames. The pipeline picks the frames that matter, finds panels and damage, and does it fast enough for a dealer standing on the forecourt.

  2. 02

Applying a grading standard, not just spotting dents

NAMA grading and BVRLA fair wear and tear are rule books. Detected damage has to be measured, placed on the right panel and passed through those rules to produce a grade a buyer would accept.

  3. 03

Evidence a dispute can't argue with

Every deduction is stored with the frame it came from, its location and the rule applied, so a disputed grade is settled by opening a still rather than relying on memory.

  4. 04

    Real-world capture conditions

Rain, reflections, low light and shaky phone footage all have to work. Guidance during filming and quality checks on the upload matter as much as the model.

  5. 05

    Runs on any phone

An installable web app avoids app-store friction for yard staff, but camera access, uploads on weak signal and processing time all have to be handled in the browser.

— Estimated build cost

What a build like this costs

£95,000–£140,000

Video inspection and grading app · indicative range for a comparable build

Sized from the codebase we built: 108k lines of production code, 34k lines of tests, 62 database tables, 210 API routes.

A product like i-Appraisal is a bespoke build, not a template: most of the cost is in the hard parts above, plus testing against real data before anyone relies on it. Where your version lands in the range depends on the factors listed here. You get a fixed price once scope is agreed — usually after a short discovery sprint. Hosting and AI model usage are billed at cost on your own accounts.

  • Number of damage types and grading standards to support
  • Accuracy needed before reports go to buyers unchecked
  • Repair pricing data and how it's maintained
  • Vehicles per day (processing cost and speed)
  • Integrations with auction, DMS or remarketing systems
